Athie was the Promotions Director for the 2011 Nannup Flower & Garden Festival. In this role she actively promoted the Festival through writing interest stories on various aspects of gardening and the festival. Her stories were run in the country and regional papers as well as “The West Australian” travel and magazine sections. From these stories I was contacted by radio stations across the State to give live interviews. Her stories created interest which converted into positive promotion which reached potential Visitors from as far North as Geraldton, East to Kalgoorlie and South to Albany, with a wide Perth, Mandurah and South West coverage. Pictures and event descriptions were placed free into the RAC Horizons magazine, Better Homes & Garden and other magazines.
She also gained coverage for the festival in the social media with My Southwest, Tourism WA and other internet sites. She sourced competition opportunities within the press, for the Festival to gain greater interest and reach a wider demographic.
Athie has a real talent for telling a human interest story that connects with people. Through her efforts visitors to our Festival came with a positive outlook ready and wanting to enjoy themselves and having some knowledge of the hard work that had gone into the preparations of the garden displays. Athie also ran workshops for interested volunteers in the making of creatures and sets for the Town Hall interactive floral display. She has artistic vision and is able to share this with those of us who just want to participate and are not artists or artisans.
Athie shows an enthusiasm and drive that is infectious. She was an integral part of our successful team that ran the 2011 Festival. She keeps within budgets and was prudent with use of paid advertising. She utilised her story placements to amplify the reach of these, to gain maximum effect for dollar spent. She has a far reaching network of contacts in the print, radio and television media. Her collaborative and engaging personality makes her a great team member and an ambassador for any cause or organisation she represents.
I can highly recommend Athie to any potential employer or organisation who would like to access her considerable talents. I would be pleased to be contacted if you have any further enquiries regarding this reference.

City of Melville Citizen of the Year 2004
This award was the acknowledgment of a host of community work for Athie but in particular for the establishment of a community newsletter designed to engage the community in conversation, activities and pride for the suburb in which they lived. The newsletter was developed by Athie who was a founding member of the community group, Willagee Alive, which in its first 18 months was one of four state finalists in the state-wide community group awards.
"I had the privilege of working with Athie Chambers during my time as Councillor and Deputy Mayor in the City of Melville and clearly remember our first contact because it is every community leader’s dream. It came as a phone call; “Hi, my name is Athie Chambers and we have just moved into Willagee. How can I get involved?”
Needless to say, I arranged to meet this new resident as soon as possible and subsequently connected her with the City’s Community Development team.
During her family’s time in Willagee, Athie’s community projects galvanised the locals into volunteering to help run family-friendly events and she was instrumental in the formation the Willagee Alive committee. Athie created its newspaper to keep the community informed and to provide the opportunity for locals to interact, exchange ideas and promote their own activities. For its production and distribution, she gained sponsorship from the Council and small businesses in the surrounding areas.
In 2000, with the enthused cooperation from the Council, Athie organised the annual Spring Markets for arts and crafts in Harmony Park. Although it was considered by some to be a near impossible feat, the event surpassed all expectations and within a short time the good news spread and in the following years, the markets were ultimately attended by folk from as far away as Joondalup!
The success of the markets was followed by the outdoor film nights, “Flicks in the Park”; family picnics and activities including various art projects and competitions for children. Apart from the enrichment of the community as a whole, a valuable consequence of these activities was the inclusion of formerly alienated children and a reduction in anti-social behaviour and vandalism.
Athie Chambers’ contributions inspired the formation of similar community committees throughout the City of Melville on the principals of Asset-Based Community Development.
In recognition of her wonderful work and tireless generosity, Athie was awarded the 2004 Citizen of the Year for the City of Melville and the Premier’s Award. She has left a positive and ongoing legacy in Willagee and is still remembered fondly and missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her and working with her. "
